Arafat to be Open Sourced by Palestinian Authority; move is criticized by Microsoft.
The Palestinian Authority announced today that it will Open Source its late leader Yasser Arafat; the action means Mr. Arafat’s ideas, politics and peccadilloes are no longer propriety to the Palestinians but freely available to the world. It is believed to be the first instance of the open-sourcing of a world leader.
“This is a global liberation movement and it should serve every human,” said Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath. “We believe we can achieve our aims more powerfully by letting oppressed people everywhere take some of Arafat, add their own ideas and contribute back to the world. You won’t find the Israelis doing this; Ariel Sharon won’t let anybody mess with his code and that’s a mistake,” said Mr. Shaath.
Dave Winer immediately said that he’d be syndicating Arafat to the geek community, where “we’ll see what kind of code this dude is really made of.” Winer also complained that he’d been Open Source for years, and why weren’t people paying more attention to him?
Reaction from Washington was swift and harsh, where Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer said anyone who subscribed to Arafat components would come to regret it, “Who will people turn to for support of these ideas? And where did all this crazy code come from in the first place? It’s built on two thousand years of Arab and Islamic angst. …just try asking the PLO for indemnification!” Ballmer also suggested there might be enormous security risks in adopting Arafat’s ideas.
The IBM Corporation announced that they would help any state implement Arafat’s ideas for a fee, “Look how difficult it was of Arafat himself to implement a solution. That’s why you need Global Services. If anyone can do the job, we can. But it won’t be cheap,” said an IBM spokesperson.
